IBM Cognos TM1 is the planning, forecasting and budgeting solution that IBM has chosen as part of its Business Analytics and Enterprise Performance Management software portfolio.
TM1 enables what-if scenario analysis and has distributed administrative capabilities, and collaborative planning, which can be applied at different levels in planning processes at the business unit, function or geographic area level.
It also supports rolling forecasts, KPI-based impact mapping and scorecarding methodologies, and can be integrated with IBM Cognos Business Intelligence to provide a single performance management platform.
IBM Cognos TM1 is installed in client/server mode, and includes a variety of tools for its use, with server applications, desktop software, web tools, and a Microsoft Excel add-in to work with TM1 cubes from within Excel.
It is based on 64-bit in-memory OLAP technology, which means that the cube analysis, query and modification operations, which are carried out in memory, achieve instant response times. It allows the modification of cubes, which is necessary for collaborative planning processes, and even the modification of data in source systems, as well as the definition of 'links' between cubes, which allow some cubes to be automatically fed with data from others.
The main IBM Cognos TM1 tools
IBM Cognos TM1 Architect
TM1 Architect is the design and modelling software for the developer, which allows you to create dimensions and cubes, and to define business rules, calculation rules, data sharing rules between cubes...
IBM Cognos TM1 Performance Modeler
TM1 Performance Modeler is a desktop tool similar to TM1 Architect, but aimed at the business user, the experienced planner who, thanks to the software's built-in guided development wizards, can build models, analyse data and deploy applications following best practices.
IBM Cognos TM1 Contributor
TM1 Contributor is the server software that enables collaborative planning through a web environment. It relies on an application server and a web server to provide a web environment with an administration tool that allows the definition of workflows and permissions to modify planning data, and a client tool that allows each user to work by analysing and modifying the data that corresponds to them in the applications to which they have access. Depending on the permissions and workflow defined, the user can also approve, reject or change the status of contributions made by other users. Contributor is responsible for connecting to the TM1 servers to maintain a single, centralised view of the data from all contributed data.
IBM Cognos TM1 Turbo Integrator
TM1 Turbo Integrator is the ETL software included with TM1, which allows you to create data loading and transformation processes to feed TM1 cubes from disparate data sources such as ODBC sources, text files, TM1 views and dimensions, ODBOs for Microsoft Analysis Services cubes, SAP tables or excel spreadsheets.
Cognos TM1 client interfaces
The business user has three client interfaces to connect to TM1 cubes and data to perform his analysis and planning tasks.
- IBM Cognos TM1 Applications Web
TM1 Web is the web application that allows you to access TM1 applications, and work with TM1 web sheets to perform analysis tasks or enter planning or budgeting data.
- IBM Cognos Insight
IBM Cognos Insight presents a workspace environment, for users who are not so comfortable with spreadsheets. From Cognos Insight the user also connects to Cognos TM1 to perform their planning and data analysis tasks.
- IBM Cognos TM1 Perspectives
TM1 Perspectives is an add-on to TM1 for Excel. This add-on allows the user to also perform data analysis tasks, but from Microsoft Excel, and can also take advantage of all the features offered by Excel.
